“The McMullen Program, and Calvert Hall in general, were instrumental in helping me refine and build on a strong work ethic that my parents instilled at an early age. At CHC, I learned to properly channel this work ethic into productive efforts, as well as to balance that with outside activities and personal interests. It really took me all four years to find the proper balance, but by the time I got to college my time management skills were well above my peers’ and I was able to easily adapt to my college routine. Furthermore, the McMullen Program and related honors and AP courses I took were often more challenging than some of my freshman and sophomore year college classes. That isn’t a knock on my college, it is a credit to the level of education I received at CHC and the curriculum the McMullen Program required. Successful completion of AP courses allowed me to begin college as a Sophomore. As a result of the McMullen Program, I would also say that my “academic maturity” was that of an upper classmen and thus I found it very easy to adapt.”
McMullen Capstone Project- A research paper titled “Through the Looking Glass: Distortions of American Foreign Policy in Vietnam.” The paper focused on the early years of America’s involvement in Vietnam and asked whether or not the strategy that eventually developed was consistent with the stated policy of “containment” when it came to the spread of communism. It gave me a unique and informed perspective on a subject I might not otherwise have had. When applying to college, I was able to point to the paper and the research I did as something that set me apart from other high school applicants. The intense research efforts really set me apart as it was a unique and challenging academic effort for a high school senior. I believe being able to point to that level of academic discipline and achievement was a direct contributor to the scholarships I received from Virginia Tech (including one from their Honors Program).
Best thing about being in the McMullen Program-I have incredibly fond memories of hanging out in the McMullen room during my free periods. Being amongst my peers and like-minded guys was enjoyable and often provided a much needed social outlet during the day.
