Calvert Hall honors Joseph Binder ’57, former teacher & coach

Calvert Hall honored Joseph “Snooky” Binder ‘57, a former teacher and coach, during a presentation, plaque dedication and “First Pitch” ceremony prior to the Cardinals varsity baseball game versus St. Paul’s at Carlo Crispino Stadium on May 2, 2011.  Joe taught physical education at The Hall from March 1967 through June 2005 and coached baseball from 1975-76 and 1981-2001, finishing with a 460-151 record and 11 titles.

Joe taught physical education at The Hall from March 1967 through June 2005 and coached baseball from 1975-76 and 1981-2001, finishing with a 460-151 record and 11 titles. He was the Baltimore Sun Coach of the Year in 1988-89 & 1994; inducted into the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1998 and inducted into the Oldtimers’ Baseball Association of Maryland Hall of Fame in 2002. He also coached basketball and volleyball during his career at Calvert Hall. As a baseball player in high school, Joe was a member of two Maryland Scholastic Association championship teams under Walter Youse in 1956-57. He continued his athletic career at the University of Baltimore playing baseball (All-Mason Dixon 1963-64) and basketball and was inducted into the UB Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. Joe and his wife, Mary Kay, are the parents of Kurtis ’88, Todd ’90, Heidi and Katie and the grandparents of 11.
