During the summer Calvert Hall began a new project of building two new turf fields in the area between the baseball stadium and the football. These fields will be the new practice areas for soccer, football, lacrosse, competition marching band, and rugby. These fields used to be where those teams, excluding rugby, would have their practices. The grass field had dirt patches everywhere and had little holes that could seriously hurt someone if they weren’t looking. The new addition of the turf fields was a good investment because it gives players/musicians better playing conditions and provides more practice space for teams to practice.

The project was delayed due to the rain we had this summer. The field is split into two different fields. The fields are lined with both lacrosse and football lines, but it will be lined for soccer. “The fields are a new addition to the school. It shows another reason why our school is such a great place to go to,” says Nathan Knowles ’20. These fields are going to help improve the performance of the teams in practice. The fields, if necessary, could be used for lacrosse and soccer games.
The new fields have expanded the options of places to practice for teams such as fresh/soph soccer. The fresh/soph soccer team used to go to Loch Raven after school for practice every day because Varsity and JV soccer take the baseball field. Before, at Loch Raven, you were limited to certain drills due to space, field conditions, and goals. Now they’ll have a nicer place to practice along with more options on what they can do with their time. I spoke with Chris Pifer ’20 about these fields and he said, “Though these fields won’t affect me I think it was a good idea, and it also helps the teams that actually need it like football and lacrosse.”
Along with the new fields, there will be new fencing around the turf. Something that will be a problem with the fencing is it will be hard to get any balls that go over it. You can’t jump the fence, so you must go all the way through the gate. Although the fence has some negatives, it also has some positives. It keeps people who aren’t supposed to be in there out, and it makes the field look a lot nicer and makes it look more professional.
These fields are one of the better decisions in most of the students opinion that Calvert Hall has done since they have been here. Noah Daly ’20, who plays rugby, said, “I'm looking forward to practicing on the turf fields and I know that all our teams will benefit from them.” Before this, both Varsity and JV Rugby would have to walk over to Loch Raven for practice. “Our team is looking for another MIAA Championship win this year, and using the turf will allow us to hone our skills even more efficiently” he added. To summarize, these fields are a big addition to Calvert Hall and they will 100% help all the teams that use them.
