Calvert Hall Cardinals Varsity lost the lead late in a 4-3 defeat to Gilman on Friday. The game was tied at two with Gilman batting in the top of the fifth when Gabe Gonzales singled on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs.
In the second inning, Gilman got their offense started. Mike Willis hit a solo homer.
Calvert Hall Cardinals Varsity evened things up at two in the bottom of the third inning when Matt Leikus induced J.P. Murphy to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored.
Leikus earned the victory on the hill for Gilman. He went two innings, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out two and walking one. Peter Heubeck and Max Costes entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Costes recorded the last four outs to earn the save for Gilman.
Dan O'Connor took the loss for Calvert Hall Cardinals Varsity. He lasted five innings, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out four.
