STEM Program

What Is STEM?

Calvert Hall’s STEM program is a comprehensive certificate program integrating academic courses with extracurricular activities, self-directed study, and internships in all four areas of STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math.

How To Get Involved In STEM?

STEM candidates must enter the program during their sophomore or junior year and are expected to participate through their senior year. Students who complete all of the STEM requirements will be recognized as a STEM graduate with a special certificate at graduation.

Academic Requirements

  • Have a yearly average of 85% in STEM classes
  • Maintain a yearly 83% average in all courses
  • Participate in extracurricular STEM activities, an independent study or an internship. Subject to the approval of the coordinators
  • Participate in at least 2 field trips or speaker series events per year
  • Take a minimum of 4 credits in science. Engineering can be one of the science credits
  • Take a minimum of 4 credits in math
  • Take at least 1 STEM-related elective
    • Computer Programming and AP Computer Science
    • Honors Anatomy & Physiology, Anatomy & Physiology, Forensic Science, Marine Biology, Earth Science, AP Physics, Physics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Environmental Science
    • AP Statistics, Statistics, AP Calculus, Honors Calculus, and Honors Multivariate Calculus
    • Engineering (I & II)
    • Graphic Design

Extracurricular Requirements

  • Participation in one or a combination of STEM activities over three years
    • Sample activities include
      • Robotics
      • Cybersecurity 
      • ACE Program
      • CHC-TV
      • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
      • Maryland Math League
      • Physics Olympics
      • Summer STEM Program/Camp
      • Self-Directed Study or Internship Component
