Alumni Blog August 2020 featuring John Smyth '74

John ‘74 & Geri Smyth, the founders of Calvert Mechanical Solutions, have a deep connection to Calvert Hall.

John and his four brothers - Jim ’70, Patrick ‘72, Tom ‘77 and Francis ’78 - are proud alumni. During his time at Calvert Hall, John remembers his favorite course, U.S. History, and its teacher, George Kropp.  John loved the back-and-forth discussions Mr. Kropp encouraged in his classroom. Mr. Kropp created a vibrant dynamic which encouraged students to think for themselves and consider a range of possibilities within the various issues that have faced the United States. John enjoyed his participation in a diverse array of activities at The Hall, most fondly his participation as Senior Section Editor of the yearbook.

John’s wife, Geri, grew up a block away from Calvert Hall College High School on Glen Keith Boulevard. As a young girl, Geri remembers hearing the band practicing on the football field during summers and the bonfires held the night before Turkey Bowl. Geri’s brother, Greg Dembeck ’81, is a graduate of Calvert Hall. They met through Timothy Hanifen ‘74. Jointly, John and Geri proudly started Calvert Mechanical, just down the street from The Hall.

On November 1, 1986, John & Geri founded Calvert Plumbing & Heating Co., Inc. out of the basement of their home off Aberdeen Road in Towson, MD.  The company’s primary business at the time was the installation of plumbing and gas piping systems with intent to further expand on residential and commercial work.  In doing so, they began with a commitment to weather storms together as a partnership in life and business through difficult situations; a recession, layoffs.  John & Geri kept true to Calvert’s mission: utilizing the highest quality workmanship with the best materials and products available to give our customers value for their dollar, and to do so in the most responsive manner possible.

With a goal in place and an iron-clad foundation, Calvert became successful and grew to what it is today.  In March 1994, Calvert became a full-service contractor, offering installation and service of commercial heating and air condition systems to its public repertoire.  In 1999. Calvert was named as one of the top 100 fastest growing companies in cities in United States by INC. Magazine.  Further, in 2015 Calvert expanded again and moved to its present home, 8801 Mylander Lane.

John and Geri believe can find success if you are driven and take care of your customers and employees.  Calvert’s word is its bond.  By maintaining integrity in relationships, one develops a foundation of loyal customers and employees.  They provide our customers outstanding service and pride ourselves on our quality of workmanship.  Calvert has and will continue to offer its employees and customers a strong and progressive company which provides a quality product with superior customer service.  Calvert believes in the safe performance of its work and is committed to the training of its employees.
